Great British Cheese Festival in Cardiff
Last week a friend asked us what we had planned for the weekend. We had some ideas but nothing definite… and that’s when he suggested a Cheese Festival. We were immediately in! According to his own words, “there’s nothing easier than getting French people go to a cheese festival”… well that’s true.
The Great British Cheese Festival was held within the grounds of Cardiff Castle on the 26th & 27th September 2009. Great location to taste (and buy) over 400 British cow, goat and sheep cheeses. I didn’t see any buffalo cheese, that’s the only one which was missing (and that’s a shame).
Entry fee was £8.50 per adult. Quite expensive actually. We thought a voucher for a masterclass was included in the price because we bought them in advance online, but we found out on the day that the offer had expired before we actually bought them… so no masterclass and we didn’t really want to pay an extra £3.50 for a masterclass.

Apart from the price issue, the festival was good. We had great weather and tried lots of different cheeses. Being French, we don’t know that many British types of cheese, so we’ve learned quite a lot and appreciated most of it - I’m not a big fan of onion, pickles or chilli cheeses, tried some but won’t change my mind… We bought our favourites: smoked farmhouse Cheddar, Dorset red, spreadable goat cheese and another one whose name I can’t remember…

But cheese was not the only highlight of the day for us. There were also stalls with all kinds of British and Welsh products. Cider, liqueurs, biscuits and most important of all, meat! And not any kind of meat. We found wild rabbit and duck hearts… yay! The rabbit is in the freezer and we’ve prepared a barbecue on the night of the festival with duck hearts kebabs, sausages and of course, cheese. That was a good day
