Walking, Camping and Barbecuing
Last weekend the camping season opened for us and it was a beautiful start. For Nicolas’ birthday, I had planned a couple of days of walking and camping in Eype, near Bridport, Dorset. I had booked a pitch at Downhouse Farm, which is a beautiful organic farm and campsite, certainly one of the best campsites we’ve ever been to.
With walking and camping also comes barbecues! How nice it is to have a piece of barbecued meat or fish after a long day of walking up and down the hills! I can’t think of anything better. However, as you can never be sure about the weather forecasts, we don’t usually plan meals in advance and wait to see what the weather is going to be like to go shopping.
We were lucky enough on this occasion to have a wonderful weather. No rain as it was forecast, except for a few drops on Saturday morning before we even got up. It was ideal for barbecues…
On Friday night, after pitching the tent, we headed for the nearest supermarket to buy one of those disposable barbecues as well as all the necessary ingredients to make burgers: burger baps, meat (which was venison and not beef this time), cheese, bacon, pickles and ketchup.
On the next day, we found out that the farm sold its own organic meat. So after a good long day of walking, and the weather being still very good and warm, we went to buy some. We chose sausages and bacon, which we made into burgers because we had baps left. Let’s add cheese, pickles and ketchup and you’ve got a perfect and truly delicious sausage burger. The sausages and bacon couldn’t have been better!
Two burgers on two consecutive nights??? Well yes, it’s our little camping treat, even though sometimes we go for fish (a salmon fillet on a bbq is one of my favourites!) or steak.
On Sunday, before driving back to Bristol, we went for a short walk to West Bay and got tempted by a “traditional” fish & chips. We were prepared for the worst, as you can often find in such touristic places, but it was actually not too bad.
We had a great time and even if, culinary speaking, it was not the healthiest tastiest food ever, I like camping food, it’s part of the experience and fun. We certainly haven’t had our 5 fruits or veg per day, but bananas and apples were nevertheless part of the journey
