February: Overview of Seasonal Food
February is the shortest month of the year with only 28 days. Yet there are a few events and celebrations which all require special menus and treats for the greatest pleasure of cooks (and guests).
February events & celebrations
- 2nd: Candlemas Day - Chandeleur in France, or pancakes’ day
- 2nd: Groundhog Day for Americans and Canadians
- 14th: Valentines’ Day
- 24th (40 days before Easter): Shrove Tuesday - celebrated with fritters in France (at least at my house)
- 25th: Ash Wednesday - first day of Lent
- 27th: Kissing Friday (Friday of Shrove Week) - British custom: English schoolboys were entitled to kiss girls in without fear of punishment or rejection. The custom lasted until the 1940s
- 27th: my birthday - well, it’s important to me…

- Haddock - Hake - Hallibut - John Dory - Lemon sole - Salmon
