Friday Weird Food: Deep-fried Pizza
After our last week weird recipe of rat (cooked like chicken), I wanted to find a less disgusting recipe. So, let’s talk (again) about deep-fried weird food, and once again, it’s from Scotland.
I have to admit that I’m a deep-fried food lover. But some recipes just send shivers down my spine. How can you possibly have the idea of deep-frying a pizza in the first place?
According to Wikipedia :
Deep-fried pizza is a dish available in many chip shops in Scotland. It originated in the late 1970s and typically consists of the cheapest of cash and carry pizzas, though a choice of “toppings” is often available, usually plain (cheese and tomato), mushroom or onion. Served as a “Pizza Supper” (with chips) or single (without chips) in whole and half pizza portions. A common accompanying beverage is Irn-Bru, a carbonated soft drink.
Is it really popular in Scotland?
I’ve asked to 3 Scottish guys working with me, and they all agree that it’s a really good appetizer. Why not after all…
Anyway, here is how to prepare and serve your handmade deep-fried pizza :
You don’t need special ingredients. Make a beer-batter with cold beer, flour and eggs. Put the pizza piece in the batter and deep-fry it in hot oil for 2 minutes. Et voilà!
With Nathalie, we were thinking about going on holidays in Scotland this year, so we should definitely go into one of these chip shops and taste their deep-fried Mars bars and pizza. The question is whether we will be adventurous enough or not to actually do it…
Do you have any recommendation? Had you ever heard about that? Or maybe tried it?
