Recipe: Cottage Pie a la Nathalie - Recette: Hachis Parmentier à la Nathalie

Submitted by Nathalie on Tuesday, 20 January 2009One Comment

For the second recipe of our week on Sweet Potatoes, I’ve decided to cook something unique and create my own recipe. At the start the objective was to make something like a cottage pie: mash potatoes and meat.

However, instead of potatoes, I’ve used sweet potatoes and because I didn’t have any beef mince, I’ve used beef and bacon, which I have cut into very small pieces.

I must say the result is not disappointing at all and Nicolas loved it!

Cottage Pie with Sweet Potatoes

Serves 4 - Ready in 1h20

Ingredients

  • 1 large sweet potato
  • 2 or 3 potatoes
  • 400g meat, cut into small pieces
  • 1 onion
  • 1 garlic clove
  • 1 can of chopped tomatoes (400g I think)
  • 1 beef stock cube
  • 50g grated cheese
  • 10g butter
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • salt and pepper

Preparation

  • Peel the potatoes and sweet potato. Cut into chunks and cook them in boiling water for about 20 minutes until very tender - The potatoes may be take a little longer.
  • Chop the onion and fry it in the olive oil. Cook for 2 minutes then add the crushed garlic. Cook for another 2 minutes on a lower heat.
  • When the onion is tender - but not brown - add in the meat.
  • Cook the meat on a medium heat for 7 minutes.
  • Add in the chopped tomatoes, the beef stock cube and a little water if needed (ie. if tomato juice is not enough). Cook on a medium heat for 7 minutes stirring occasionally, then put up the heat to reduce the sauce.
  • Season with salt and pepper (there was no need to add salt in my recipe as I had bacon in it).
  • When the potatoes and sweet potato are cooked, mash them. Add the butter (you can also add milk or cream if you want) and stir well. Season to taste.
  • Pre-heat the grill of the oven and butter an oven-proof dish.
  • Spoon in a layer of the meat mixture, then a layer of mash potatoes and make the surface flat.
  • Add the grated cheese on top and gratinate under a hot grill for 10 minutes until golden brown.

Bon Appetit!

Hachis Parmentier à la Nathalie

Pour 4 personnes - Prêt en 1h20.

Ingrédients

  • 1 grosse patate douce
  • 1 oignon
  • 1 gousse d’ail
  • 1 boite de tomates concassées (400g environ il me semble)
  • 1 bouillon cube de boeuf
  • 50g de fromage rapé
  • 10g de beurre
  • 2 cs d’huile d’olive
