Friday Weird Food: Road-Kill Recipes

Welcome to our new post, part of our Friday weird food series.

Today we are going to talk about Road-Kill recipes.

road killed teddyOk ok, this not a real “Road-kill”, I’m sensitive ;)

I don’t know if you’ve already heard about it, but, according to the media and economists, we are living a real crisis. Probably the worst period since the Second World War. That’s why we’re now talking a lot about recycling, wasting less food and water …

So now, would you eat “road-kills” to survive?

This is what Arthur Boyt (biologist from Cornwall) has done during 50 years. He regularly eats badger, rabbit, deer, weasel, hedgehog, squirrel and fox. He keeps carcasses found on the road to cook them in his kitchen.

According to Mr Boyt, this is free organic meat, and cooked at high temperature, there is nearly no danger (if you have a first good selection).

Why not? After all, in Australia, eating road killed kangaroos is normal. But there is something in eating badger or hedgehog that disturbs me.

Not weird enough?

If you want to cook some little animals found on the road, you can have some Road-kill recipe books.

The last cookbook written by Arthur Boyt is sold on Amazon.

Here is another: the Original Road Kill cookbook, written in 1988 by a guy named Buck Peterson.

Recipe Examples (seen in the Guardian)

Hedgehog spaghetti carbonara (serves four)

500g spaghetti, 30ml olive oil, 250g lean hedgehog, 1 medium onion (chopped), 125ml water, 60ml dry white wine, 4 eggs, 60ml double cream, 100g grated parmesan cheese · chop hedgehog into small chunks

· Beat eggs and cream together in a bowl. Add half the parmesan cheese.

· Put pasta in boiling water.

· Put onions and hedgehog chunks in pan with olive oil on medium heat until onions are almost clear.

· Add wine and reduce heat.

· Drain pasta when cooked, combine it with egg, cream and cheese mix.

· Add meat, onions and wine without draining fat and mix thoroughly.

· Garnish with remaining parmesan. Serve immediately

Actually, I’m not ready to test these recipes. I can imagine myself eating badger, or squirrels and why not hedgehogs, but not road killed…

    Well… I don’t know what I would do if I had to… but I would certainly eat anything if I was really starving..especially if I don’t have to kill the animal myself… well I realize this is quite a weird post.. anybody else’s opinion welcome!!

    … took a pair of petanque bowls and threw them onto the pheasant and from my point of view in the car I only could see max’s arm pointing to the sky with the bowls in his hand in order to take speed and weight and kill this pheasant(i was horrified).
    in the end the pheasant did not want to die this day unfortunately because it seems that pheasant is delicious.
