Friday Weird Food: Deep-Fried Mars Bar

Submitted by Nicolas on Friday, 9 January 2009No Comment

Deep-fried Mars bar

As a French man, I must admit that I have a lack in some foreign cooking culture. So I decided to create a Friday Weird Food Series. Every Friday, a new weird recipe :D

In France I had heard about it, but I thought it was a joke, or an urban legend. But it’s not : the deep-fried Mars bar.

History

This strange Scottish recipe was invented in 1995 in the Haven Chip Bar in the town of Stonehaven.

And according to Wikipedia

“In a study published in The Lancet in December 2004, David Morrison (Greater Glasgow NHS Board, UK) and Mark Petticrew (MRC Social & Public Health Sciences Unit) surveyed around 300 Scottish fish and chip shops: 22% sold deep-fried Mars Bars, while an additional 17% of those surveyed had sold them in the past. Of the shops selling deep-fried Mars bars, three-quarters had only been selling them for the past 3 years. Average sales were 23 bars per week, although 10 outlets sold between 50 and 200 bars a week. The average price per bar was 60 pence, and the younger generation were the main purchasers–three-quarters were sold to children and 15% to adolescents.”

It is pretty simple to cook:

Ingredients

  • 1 UK or Canadian Mars Bar or 1 US Milky Way Bar (same thing)
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 cup flour
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tablespoon oil or fat (use suet for authenticity)

Procedure

  • Chill, but do not freeze, the Mars bar by leaving it in a fridge, or freezer, for a short while.
  • Mix the milk, flour and egg in a bowl.
  • Whisk together to create a creamy batter.
  • Heat the oil.
  • Coat the Mars bar completely in batter.
  • Lower into hot oil and fry until batter is golden brown.
  • Serve.

As simple as it is.

I promise I’ll try it one day, even though on the paper it appears very weird to me.

Have you ever tasted a deep-fried Mars bar?
Do you have any weird recipes on your cookbook ?
